Shadows and Steel is an award-winning military strategy game developed by the U.S. Army War College to explore the future of warfare, force design, and military innovation through competitive play. Combining the excitement of deck construction with the challenges of modern multi-domain operations, players command military capabilities across land, sea, air, space, and cyber environments while adapting to an ever-changing battlespace. More than just a game, Shadows and Steel serves as a tool for critical thinking, experimentation, and strategic discussion, allowing players to test ideas, explore emerging technologies, and better understand the complex challenges that will shape tomorrow's conflicts. Whether you are a gamer, military professional, student, or strategist, Shadows and Steel offers a unique opportunity to compete, learn, and help envision the future of warfare.
After an extensive series of playtests, demonstrations, and competitive events, the Army Domain of Shadows and Steel is approaching the conclusion of its Alpha development cycle and is expected to enter Beta development in the near future. As the Army Domain matures, attention will increasingly shift toward the creation of the game's remaining four domains, beginning with the highly anticipated Space Domain. Each domain will be designed as a standalone experience while remaining fully compatible with the larger Shadows and Steel ecosystem. The long-term vision is an interconnected multi-domain campaign system where actions taken in one domain influence events in the others, allowing players to command and coordinate military capabilities across land, sea, air, space, and cyber in a single, unified strategic experience. When fully realized, Shadows and Steel will provide a unique framework for exploring the opportunities, challenges, and complexities of modern multi-domain warfare.
